Welcome to American in Finland!

Most Americans know very little about Finland and when it is mentioned most of us immediately think of bright colored outfits, reindeer, Santa Claus, and universal healthcare. Like most things in life the reality is far more complex and may I say beautiful. Not only is Finland one of the worlds healthiest and best educated places, but it is also a place full of surprises for Americans. In many ways I have found that Finns share many characteristics with Americans and I never expected that when I first met a Finn in 2010.

The purpose of this blog is to share with you my experiences of living as an American in Finland and how these experiences are similar to or different from what you would get back in my home in the United States. I hope that as you follow along you will come to experience Finland in some small way and that the things I write about will prove useful for you if you visit this beautiful and unique place.
